Game Versions
We recognize four major game versions within the Lineage 2 universe: Lineage 2, Main (GOD), Essence, and Classic. Officially, 'Lineage 2' encompasses everything from Prelude (C0) to the current game version. However, the significant gameplay changes introduced with the GOD expansion marked a major shift. To better represent this evolution, we split the game into two distinct versions: 'Lineage 2' (C0 to High Five) and 'Main' (GOD and beyond).
Classic was NCSoft's attempt to let players relive the old-school grind by releasing a version that combined nostalgic gameplay with a modern interface. However, instead of sticking to the original chronicles, each expansion introduced new ideas, gradually making Classic feel less like the original. This shift is why Classic servers are less popular in the community; for example, players looking to play C4 often opt for a dedicated Lineage 2 C4 server instead. Additionally, most Lineage 2 servers today have adopted modern interfaces by utilizing updated game clients.
Essence, released in 2019, is a simplified and more accessible version of Lineage 2. It introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements, including streamlined leveling, linear progression, and a casual-friendly design. This version is an excellent choice for players who want to enjoy the world of Lineage 2 without the grind and complexity of its original iterations
